SummaryThe course introduces students to the nature and process of academic research in Archaeology, from the conception of research projects to the collection and analysis of archaeological data. The aim of the course is to provide students with general research and data processing skills, and to prepare them for the dissertation in year 4.
Course description Through a series of seminars and practical workshops, students will develop the following skills: identifying academic issues and developing appropriate research questions; searching and reviewing relevant literature; choosing appropriate research materials and methods; identifying data types and sources; analysing quantitative and qualitative data; presenting information textually and visually.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Archaeology of Scotland (ARCA08016) AND Archaeology in Action (ARCA08017)
Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Archaeology in Practice: I. Professional Practice (ARCA10107)
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Archaeology in Practice (ARCA10065)

Feedback Students are expected to discuss their coursework with the Course Organiser at least once prior to submission, and are encouraged to do so more often. Meetings can take place with the Course Organiser during their published office hours or by appointment. Students will also receive feedback on their coursework, and will have the opportunity to discuss that feedback further with the Course Organiser.
