| Summary | Research Portfolio B will build on the research skills developed in Research Portfolio A to give students the experience of independently designing a detailed research proposal. Students will be expected to reflect on their preliminary research proposal and annotated bibliography to produce a detailed research proposal. They will also develop skills in working with primary materials. |
| Course description |
Research Portfolio B will introduce students on Chinese Studies degree programmes to core principles of research design and data analysis. The course will give students the experience of reflecting critically on feedback from their preliminary research proposal to produce a detailed research proposal. The detailed research proposal will serve as the foundational plan for their undergraduate dissertation project.
The course builds on the principles of good academic practice and research methods introduced in Research Portfolio A. An online workshop at the start of the course will introduce students on how to develop their preliminary ideas into a more detailed research plan. Online supervision meetings will facilitate students in reflecting critically on their preliminary research proposal. A template for the detailed research proposal will provide scaffolding for the research design and guide students to consider the relevance of their research topic, their research question(s), their topic's relation to some of the available academic literature, potential primary materials, and potential research ethics risks or issues. The course is designed to prepare students for writing their undergraduate dissertation in Year 4.
