| Summary | MBiol students will undertake a research project during Year 5. This will provide an opportunity for students to work in industry or a University research group (locally or internationally) to complete an independent research project agreed by the student and the external partner. The course aims to develop and allow students to practice the necessary skills to perform independent research in a professional setting. |
| Course description |
The placement project course constitutes full-time study at a research laboratory (at Edinburgh or another national or international University); research institute, or in industry.
Students are required to identify a suitable placement opportunity and submit applications to those placements, in some cases on a competitive basis. Students will undertake an extended research project on a topic agreed with their host supervisor.
The student will complete reflective exercises throughout their placement, culminating in a reflective report.
For the project itself, the student will be required to perform a review of the literature associated with the topic and conduct any appropriate experimental, observational or computational work before subsequently writing a report and producing (and defending) a research poster of their research.
The course aims to provide students with a scaffolded opportunity to engage in independent research, of their choosing, in an authentic professional environment.
The research placement project forms part of the curriculum for the MBiol degree programme in Biological Sciences and is only available to students in Year 5 of that programme.

Additionally, continuing to reflect during their placement, for example on how they are progressing and what is needed to continue to be successful, will strengthen this attribute.
¿ Outlook and engagement ¿ through working directly in a professional environment they will deepen their understanding and network either locally, nationally or internationally.
¿ Research and enquiry ¿ through deciding for themselves on an area of interest and then engaging in their own independent research on that topic, in collaboration with professionals in the relevant area.
¿ Personal effectiveness ¿ through their continued reflection and the normal troubleshooting that is required during independent research, which will be supported by their host institution.
¿ Communication ¿ through their completion of a written scientific report based on their research and the production of an informative and concise research poster, through which they will get direct feedback from staff and peers.
