SummaryThis course is a core element of the MSc Psychological Therapies (CBT) and is designed for students undertaking clinical placements within the Centre for Psychological Therapies, as well as child and adolescent mental health professionals working in NHS or related settings.

Course description The course introduces the evidence base and theoretical foundations of cognitive and behavioural interventions for children and adolescents. Students will examine the application of cognitive¿behavioural models to the assessment, formulation, and treatment of anxiety and depression in young people. Core themes include the evaluation of CBT¿s effectiveness; the relevance of cognitive developmental theory for therapeutic practice; and the adaptation of behavioural and cognitive methods for children, adolescents, and families. A specific focus is placed on CBT interventions for anxiety and depression.

A key feature of the course is its integrative teaching approach, which considers typical and atypical cognitive, emotional, and social development and the interaction among these domains. Students will develop a developmentally informed understanding of clinical presentations and learn to embed this knowledge within CBT case formulation.

The course is delivered over the full academic year, beginning in Semester 1 and continuing into Semester 2. Teaching is provided through a blend of lectures, interactive workshops, and structured online tasks
