On this 1-year course at Scandinavian Studies you will continue to improve your speaking, comprehension, reading and writing of the Danish language, and you will be moving on to more complex grammar, fine-tuning your pronunciation and building on your vocabulary. Along with the assessments, you are required to do a set amount of homework as preparation for each class. You will also be doing frequent mini-presentations in class and writing texts to hand in.

| Course description |
Danish Language 2 is a full-year 20-credit course, partly in the target language. The aim of the course is to build on and develop the skills acquired in first year so that, by the end of the session, the student will be linguistically competent to study at a Danish university, having reached CEFR level B2.
Students will practise to speak at a level that encompasses everyday situations and a wide range of topics in current affairs and general culture. They will practise to write the language accurately using all the main grammatical structures and with an ability to vary register according to the main types of informal and formal usage. Students will also develop skills in comprehending ordinary speech at natural speed in everyday situations and to understand the spoken language as, for instance, used in radio/TV documentaries, lectures and discussions. Students will develop the ability to follow a university course in the target language in subject areas that the student is specialising in.
Breakdown of Learning & Teaching Activities
The teaching activities on this course have two different formats. There will be two synchronous sessions per week, where students meet their tutor for small-group language teaching emphasising oral proficiency [Synchronous]. Other activities will be based on resources made available via the course Learn page, including formal grammar teaching, video material, computer-assisted exercises, and articles from Danish newspapers and magazines available on the Internet [Asynchronous]. Each week, you are expected to prepare for the synchronous sessions by completing the asynchronous preparation outlined in that week¿s instructions. Communication in the target language is key on this course. Students are also expected to keep their knowledge of Danish current affairs up-to-date by reading newspapers etc. regularly on the Internet.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Oral comprehension, production and interaction: Demonstrate comprehension of the main ideas of linguistically complex discourse on both concrete and abstract topics delivered in standard language (or a familiar variety), including discussions on cultural and topical issues. Give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects, expressing and supporting a point of view in a discussion by providing relevant explanations, arguments and examples. Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party.
- Reading comprehension: Read a variety of different texts with a large degree of independence, using appropriate reference sources. Can demonstrate an active reading vocabulary of high-frequency words on a wide range of topics.
- Mediation: Show self-reliance, initiative, and the ability to work creatively and flexibly with others as part of a team.
- Written production and interaction: Produce cohesive, well-structured texts on a variety of subjects, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments from a number of sources. Express news and views effectively in writing, and relate to those of others.
