SummaryModern Arabic Literature in Translation provides a survey of the key developments in modern Arabic prose and poetry from the 19th century to the present day. A selection of representative works from both genres will be read (in English) and discussed against the historical, political and social contexts within which they were created.
Course description The course offers a close examination of some of the key themes, forms and techniques used by modern Arab writers and poets, focusing on a selection of illustrative works from both genres. The literature covered represents several different Arab countries and both male and female authors.

The topics discussed may include but are not limited to: pre-modern literary heritage, the Nahda, colonialism, and post-colonial concerns and themes in prose, and neo-classicism, romanticism, modernism, and post-modernist trends in poetry.

The course consists of 2-hour seminars per week. Each week, one or two primary texts and several secondary readings will be assigned, to be read in advance and discussed in class.

Feedback Students will be provided with immediate oral feedback on in-class discussions, and marks and written feedback on the essay and time-limited assignment within 3 weeks of submission date. The students also have an opportunity to submit an essay draft outline, to receive feedback prior to the essay submission deadline.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an informed knowledge of key literary developments in Arabic prose and poetry from the 19th century onwards
  2. Demonstrate an awareness of historical, political and social contexts within which modern Arabic literature developed
  3. Critically discuss various themes found in modern Arabic literature
  4. Analyse various forms and techniques used by modern Arab writers and poets
  5. Critically assess secondary literature on various aspects of modern Arabic prose and poetry
