Summary1. the concept of competition in economic literature and in the structure of the EU treaties;
2. common concepts: 'undertaking'; 'effect on trade' and 'appreciable' effect
3. Article 101: structure, goals and function; Article 101 (1) and (3);
4. Article 101 and 'valuable' content: media licensing and trademarks in e-commerce;
5. Article 102: purpose; concept of dominance and assessment;
6. Competition law and Intellectual Property Rights in innovative industries: refusals to licence; pay-for-delay agreements;
7. Competition law in digital markets: platforms and the Digital markets Act;
8. Artificial Intelligence and Competition Law
9. An introduction to state aid
10. An introduction to the enforcement of competition law: public and private

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. have acquired an appreciation of the place, policy and objectives of the regulation of competition;
  2. demonstrate a detailed understanding of the relevant rules of EU law, their application, and the role competition regulation plays in the wider purpose of the Union;
  3. analyse the interactions between competition law and others area of the law, e.g. Intellectual property law;
  4. discuss the impact of the competition rules on digital markets.
