| Summary | This course aims to introduce the foundational theory and practical design techniques required for antenna and radiating system engineering at radio frequencies (RF) and microwave frequencies. The course starts with an overview of antenna engineering basics, introduction to various antenna types, and standard ways of assessing antenna radiation and performance metrics. CAD software packages reinforce these learning objectives with the design of various antenna types. Measured antenna structures are further assessed in a hands-on practical lab were realized gain, polarization and power is examined in more detail. Other topics and examples included, antenna systems such as radar, communications, phased arrays, beam-steering, and system noise concepts. Overall the course is intended to give students an appreciation and insight into antenna and RF/microwave system design as well as the critical components within any RF system. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand key components of an RF system and how they work;
- Describe the nature of the electro-magnetic field around various antenna types;
- Explain what is meant by "near" and "far" electro-magnetic fields;
- Use S-parameters to analyse multi-port networks at RF and microwave frequencies;
- Design basic RF systems; including antennas, matching circuits and RF amplifiers.
