| Summary | This is a 5 week course to build on introductory knowledge and understanding of qualitative research. It is focused on developing interviewing and analysis skills and is split into two sections accordingly. Weeks 1-2 involve interviewing fieldwork and weeks 3-5 are focused on analysing real qualitative data. The assignment is worth 100% and is split into two parts reflecting the two components of the course. |
| Course description |
In this five-week, 10-credit course we will build on the key concepts and ideas in qualitative research from the core course Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods. We will focus on the processes and skills involved in interviewing during the fieldwork stage of qualitative research (weeks 1 and 2), and on analysing real data from a qualitative study completed by other researchers (weeks 3-5).
There are two significant practical aspects as part of the learning. The first is that you will conduct a full length semi-structured interview with a fellow student, and be interviewed as well. The aim of this exercise is that you will finish feeling confident to plan and conduct a one-to-one qualitative research interview in a rigorous way. The second is that you will conduct a secondary analysis of a small qualitative data set in order to apply the ideas and concepts we will discuss in the teaching sessions. You will use the interview and the data analysis for the assignment at the end of the course.
We will also spend time linking your interviewing and data analysis skills to the underlying theoretical ideas underpinning qualitative research (introduced in the core module Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods), such as reflexivity, intersubjectivity, being rigorous and transparent. Doing this will help you to prepare for qualitative research in your dissertation project and/or enable you to take an active role in conducting qualitative research in your future work.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Design a topic guide for a qualitative research interview
- Plan and conduct a qualitative research interview in a rigorous manner
- Plan and conduct thematic analysis of qualitative research data using appropriate coding techniques
- Select and present key findings from your analysis in a way that is appropriate for qualitative research in public health
- Practice reflexivity to keep track of your thoughts and assumptions during the research process to ensure rigour and criticality

Additional Information
| Graduate Attributes and Skills |
During this course students will have to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others. Their knowledge and understanding of qualitative interviewing and data analysis in qualitative health research will improve, but they will also learn generic approaches/skills such as classifying information, problem solving, personal reflection, critically analysing materials and evaluation skills. Since the course is distance learning, it will contribute to their IT, writing and communication skills. The discussion boards will also encourage peer learning, interaction and curiosity. Finally, they will be expected to be able to bring together and draw from the information provided through the course during their assignment writing. Competencies such as structuring of work, written communication of ideas, time management and accurate referencing should improve. |
