SummaryThe course provides students with a critical understanding of quantitative and qualitative research study designs and data analysis techniques. This understanding is then applied and contextualised to programme-specific domains, enabling students to see the applied use of this understanding.
Course description The course is built around three areas of content: 1. Criticality evaluating and applying research designs in applied settings, 2. Quantitative techniques, 3. Qualitative techniques). The course content will be contextualised to each programme¿s respective, applied domain. Key topics that will be covered include common discipline-specific quantitative and qualitative research designs, bias and rigour in research design, and statistical analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Content will be delivered in a way that maximises the opportunity for activities and discussions in class time that facilitate student learning and engagement.

Feedback Students will receive formative feedback throughout the course, primarily through in-class activities. Formative assessment opportunities will be provided, and feedback on these given. Students will receive cohort-level examination feedback for assessment 1, and cohort-level and individual feedback on assessment 2.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse research designs and identify threats to validity and/or credibility, with reference to students¿ own professional settings.
  2. Exercise substantial autonomy in the execution and interpretation of fundamental quantitative techniques in the context of the student¿s own professional area.
  3. Exercise substantial autonomy in the execution and interpretation of fundamental qualitative techniques in the context of the student¿s own professional area.¿
