| Summary | Themes in Contemporary Art introduces you to a series of current themes or concerns in the field of contemporary art and encourages you to consider and make your own contribution to this field, developing your own thematic lens through which to approach artistic theory and practice today.
Each academic year, new themes in contemporary theory and practice are identified to focus your engagement with contemporary art¿s increasingly diverse subject-matter and methods. |
| Course description |
Themes in Contemporary Art is structured around a set of ¿learning sprints¿ ¿ short blocks of learning with a specific focus. Each sprint introduces you to a theme in the field of contemporary art and explores this through theory and practice. Each thematic learning sprint is developed by the teaching team and draws on their own research and practice.
Through these learning sprints, you will develop your understanding of a range of current concerns in contemporary art. The themes also offer an insight into how thematic research is conducted; as such, the learning sprints are useful models for how you can develop and apply your own thematic lens to engage with contemporary art.
Each week, you will attend one Themes seminar. What you do in each seminar will vary from week to week but will include a mixture of lecture style presentations, creative activities, groupwork, and discussion. In advance of each seminar, you will engage with a range of resources introducing you to key ideas and practices to support your learning in the seminar. Following each Sprint, you will complete a short assignment to consolidate and extend your learning.
