Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Describe the principles, uses and limitations of laboratory diagnostic procedures (manual, automated and Point-of-Care) including microscopy, culture, protein/nucleic acid-based, serological/other assays of host-response, and emerging diagnostics.
  2. Understand biological, biomedical and fundamental technical background of diagnostic tests, identify unmet needs and gaps in knowledge and understanding and demonstrate ability to develop research programmes to address these gaps.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the repertoire of investigations available for a given clinical scenario, their merits and limitations. Understand results comprehensively and demonstrate competence in key aspects of data handling.
  4. Understand the principles and role of pathogen reference laboratories, the requirement for internal and external quality assurance, and the process of laboratory accreditation.
