SummaryThis course aims to provide the basic understanding of antimicrobial agents and their use in clinical settings, how to use antimicrobial agents rationally based on evidence and existing policies, how to use antimicrobial agents safely and competently, and the understanding of the evidence that underpins policy development and stewardship.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate understanding of the different types and mode of action of antimicrobial agents, and the molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance.
  2. Explain the theory of antimicrobial stewardship, and the application and practice of antimicrobial stewardship in clinical cases.
  3. Understand the role and importance of empirical and molecular epidemiology in the development of strategies and policies in the area of anti-infective therapy both nationally and globally.
  4. Understand the use of antimicrobial agents in clinical management.
  5. Explain and discuss the far reaching implications of antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistant organisms e.g. clinical, economic, and societal).
