SummaryFrench Language Stage 1 for IFP offers a unique opportunity to learn one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

You will develop communication skills that will enable you to engage in basic everyday conversations in French. You will also develop intercultural competence and learning strategies.

This course will allow you to continue to French Foundation Language 2 or equivalent when you progress to your undergraduate degree studies.
Course description French Language Stage 1 for IFP is a complete beginners language course for students on the University of Edinburgh International Foundation Programme who have met the specific English language requirements for their chosen degree programme.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will achieve the equivalent of A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale) and will have developed essential skills to study an additional language.

You will develop these basic linguistic and study skills through a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The course focuses on language that is required for communicating in real everyday situations, such as introducing oneself and others and talking about the daily routine.

The course will include autonomous learning activities, which enable you to practise and consolidate your languages skills as well as to develop essential strategies to learn an additional language.

You will explore the use of the language in a supportive and inclusive learning environment, allowing you to increase your familiarity with and confidence in using the target language.

Learning is assessed formally throughout the course, with the teacher providing regular feedback to help you progress and plan your independent learning.

Feedback You will develop your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a variety of tasks in the classroom and autonomous learning activities.

You will receive regular formative feedback and feed forward on your progress in general. The assessment tasks will be marked using rubrics and detailed feedback will be provided.
