MIDI Systems 4a: Theory and Operation (U00894)

An introduction to the MIDI standard and its applications in sequencing and real-time control of sound synthesis and processing. An introduction to the MAX programming language will also be given. Lectures will include technical and contextual topics.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : U00890: Sound Recording 3a - Location OR U00891: Sound Recording 3b - Studio OR U00810: Electroacoustic Composition 3a OR U00826: Electroacoustic Composition 3b.

? Costs : Purchase of recording media.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will understand the MIDI protocol.
- They will understand various MIDI devices, in particular hardware for synthesis and sampling.
- They will operate a sequencing application with technical and aesthetic success.
- They will gain experience in MIDI programming in the MAX environment.

Assessment Information

One creative project (50%) and one MAX programming exercise (50%).
