Underwater Archaeology (AR0010)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : HCA-3-AUndWater The course aims to provide an integrated approach to the study of submerged archaeological sites. It covers the history and development of underwater archaeology and discusses problems of incorporating results from submerged sites into the mainstream archaeological record. The methods and techniques of underwater survey and excavation are covered with special emphasis on the viability of shallow water work and the problems of deep water sites. The course aims to: increase student awareness of underwater archaeology's place in the subject of archaeology as a whole; emphasise the extra dimentions which can be added to the archaeological record by an appreciation of sites underwater; broaden the students' range of understanding archaeological retrieval methods; instill a realistic appreciation of the practical difficulties and problems of working underwater; make students aware of the growing development of underwater archaeology around the world; broaden employment prospects.
Assessment Information
Coursework (essay) 40%, Examination (2 hour paper) 60%.
