Plant remains are common on archaeological sites - this course sets out to explore the ways in which these remains can be used to reconstruct past environments, subsistence economies and social interaction.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A knowledge and understanding of
- the origins, conceptual and theoretical basis of Archaeobotany in its widest sense and how it contributes to the study of the human past and other cognate environmental sciences.
- the different ways in which people have utilised plant resources and the evolution of the common crop husbandry regimes.
- the impact which these developing agricultural systems have had upon the wider plant communities which make up the 'vegetation landscape'.
- the integration of the data produced by the study of plant remains into wider archaeological concerns and the illustration as to how plant remains may illuminate more than the 'economy'.

Assessment Information

coursework: 40%
degree exam (2 hour paper): 60%
