Archaeology of Scotland 1A (AR0056)

The course consists of two modules. Module 1: Past Environments and the Practice of Archaeology in Scotland - a study of the human relationship with the landscape of Scotland throughout prehistory and an introduction to the basic principles and practice of archaeology. Module 2: Early Societies in Scotland - hunter-gatherers and first farmers; burial and ritual monuments; the coming of metalworking.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

This course aims to provide students with a wide-ranging and critical introduction to the range of pre-medieval archaeological remains within Scotland and to the interpretation of these remains. The basic principles and methods of archaeological approaches will be introduced in so far as they are appropriate to the material discussed.

Assessment Information

1 essay, portfolio of work consisiting of reports from tutorials, museum visit, one Saturday field trip. Essay = 20%, Portfolio = 20%, degree exam (December) = 60% with a minimum grade E in degree exam.
