Chinese 1 (AS0001)

The course enables students to acquire fluency in modern spoken (Mandarin) and written Chinese through interative class work, tutorials and language laboratory practice. Throughout the course, language learning is placed in the cultural context of the Chinese speaking world today.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : No previous knowledge of Chiense is required, but SCE or GCE qualifications at Higher Grade or Advanced Level in an ancient or modern language would be an advantage

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students acquire a solid foundation in the grammar and phonetics of the Chinese language and fundamental skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. A sensitivity to the historical and cultural context of the Chinese speaking world is also encouraged.

Assessment Information

Weekly exercises, 2 class exams. Class work 30%; Degree exam 70%.
