Business Ethics (BS0006)

The course deals with issues which will confront business students in their future careers, providing a structured analysis of ethical theory and examining the issues surrounding the application of ethical principles and values to decision-making in business. The course deals with the philosophical debates underpinning theoretical approaches to ethical behaviour, including Kantian deontology, the work of Locke and Rawls concerning rights, justice and limits to self-interest. Utilitarianism, and various approaches to the issues of marketplace behaviour and corporate governance emerging in the work of Adam Smith, Milton Friedman and JK Galbraith. Theoretical principles are then applied to solve case study material covering a range of commercial practices including; workplace rights, whistleblowing, public relations, advertising and environmental issues.
