Investment and Securities Markets (BS0098)

This course is designed to help you become a better investor and make you more marketable to investment houses and financial employers more generally. It seeks to develop your knowledge and understanding of professional investment analysis and the behaviour of securities markets, including the theory and practice of investment. The course focuses on the workings of the equity and bond markets. The main topics are portfolio theory, stock market efficiency and market anomalies, equity and bond valuation, investment analysis, behavioural finance and investor psychology, and fund management. The course is international in orientation and presented from the perspective of investors and the analysts who serve them. By the end of the course you should have a better idea of how equity and bond markets operate and how investment portfolios are managed. You will also have been introduced to some of the main areas of academic research in investment.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successfully completing this course you will have an understanding of the workings of the equity and bond markets and be able to communicate effectively with practitioners.

You will have developed necessary skills to be more effective as an investor and have an appropriate background to help you work in the securities markets.

You will understand what market efficiency really means in practice and the issue of market anomalies.

You will understand how securities analysts and fund managers work and what is important to them.

You will know about some of the main ideas underpinning the new discipline of behavioural finance and the implications of an understanding of investor psychology for investment professionals.

You will have been introduced to some of the main areas of academic research in investment.

Assessment Information

Investment analysis exercise in groups 30%. Final examination 70%.
