The Management of Technology (BS0109)

In this course, issues in the management of technology (the generation and commercial deployment of new products, technologies, and techniques) are explored. The central focus is the process of implementation whereby human, technical, and organisational elements are combined together in an appropriate configuration to create an operating system that efficiently meets the particular objectives of the introducing organisation. The general aims are:

(i) to introduce technologies of current interest and importance;

(ii) to develop an understanding of the technical and managerial issues involved;

(iii) to provide an appreciation of the resources available (theories, methods, techniques, information sources, and agencies) for analysing and managing technology.

(iv) to enable the prosecution of a practical project on implementation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course students should be able to show that they:a)appreciate the complex character of technology as involving technical, organisational, financial and cultural aspects;b)are familiar with the range of technologies currently attracting managerial attention;c)appreciate the range of analytical frameworks available and their differential appropriateness for structuring the diversity of management problems confronted;d) appreciate other resources available (theories, methods, techniques, information sources, and agencies) for analysing and managing the implementation of new technologies, especially under conditions of rapid change;e)understand the range of management issues involved in successful implementation;

Assessment Information

By a group project (30%) based on a live case study; a short individual briefing paper (20%) dealing with technology and strategy; and a major project (50%) involving the analysis of an operating system/business process and the presentation of a plan for the implementation of an appropriate technology.
