The Management of Human Resources (BS0147)

This course analyses the organisational issues arising from the management of human resources and of the employment relationship. It begins by considering the extent to which the terms of the debate on managing employees have shifted in recent years, largely driven by key changes in the economic, political, social, and legal environment. In particular, it examines claims of a shift in managerial approaches from low-trust to high-trust employee relations. From this, the course examines developments in the key component parts of human resource management, and issues of contemporary interest and significance, such as flexible employment, managing work-life balance, legal regulation of HRM, managing age and retirement.

The Management of Human Resources is intended to be of relevance to all managers who manage employees, not simply to specialist managers in human resource or personnel functions. The course draws heavily on practice, using large-scale survey evidence and case study evidence as appropriate. The sessions are organised to encourage active student participation through individual and small group activities.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the students should:
-be able to describe and discuss the key elements of current debates in human resource management
-be able to outline alternative approaches to specific policy areas, such as appraisal systems or selection methods
-be able to identify the scale and nature of adoption of specific personnel policies

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by an integrative, essay-based assignment.
