East Asia has gone from boom to crisis and made an imprint in both regional and global economic growth and development dynamics. Factor-driven industrial policies had transformed and restructured many commodity-based economies to export-oriented industrial economies. Many East Asian economies have achieved international competitiveness in relatively high-technology products. Economic and political reforms in awakening China and the second generation "tiger" economies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have extended the Asian miracle to beyond Japan and the first generation newly-industrialising economies (NIEs

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
- Political structures in each country
- The alliances and treaties that influence outcomes in the region.
- The social trends that influence the economic potential of the different countries
- The role of the Chinese as a cohesive and dominant intellectual group
- The application of international economics to geo political realities
- STEP analysis (Social, Technical, Economic, and Political) in the analysis of threats, and opportunities
- The application of these ideas to country risk analysis.
- The role of government in the economics development of different countries in the region.

Assessment Information

There will be no examination. The course requires one group project, one solo assignment and class participation including presentation of the group project by all members of the team.
1. Class participation (contribution to discussion and case presentation) (30%).
2. Group project (30%). Students will form small groups. Each group will lead a case discussion (provided) for presentation during class. The case report (10-12 pages, double-spaced including footnotes, figures and appendices) will be submitted a week after the presentation for assessment. Suggested topics are given below.
3. Individual assignment (40%). Each student must prepare an analytic essay on recent developments in a company or an industry operating in the Asia Pacific region (10-12 pages, double-spaced including footnotes, figures and appendices). This must be a solo effort.
