Greek and Latin Panegyric (CL0125)

This course will focus on Greek and Latin panegyrical literature from Classical Antiquity. It will consider the rhetorical theory of panegyric; its practical application in poetic and prose form; the historical and social context of panegyrical literature; its evolution amid constitutional and religious change.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A Pass in 2 of:- Classical Literature 1; or Ancient History 1, or Ancient History 2; or Latin 1, or Latin 2; or Greek 1, or Greek 2.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : In order for a student from outwith Classics to be enrolled on this course, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 in order for approval to be obtained.

? Costs : Copy of the prescribed text/s.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should: be acquainted with the principles of classical panegyric; have read in translation an extensive prescription of classical panegyric and panegyrical influences in other genres; be able to relate panegyric to historical and literary context; be able to consider the changing social function of panegyric; be able to discuss critically interpretative issues which arise from the texts and from a range of scholarship; have written both an essay of c.2,000 words and a short analysis of a portion of text; have contributed to seminar topics.

Degree examination 70%; Coursework 30%
