Early Virgil (CL0143)

This course will look at Vergil's early works, the Eclogues and the Georgics. The texts will be studied and analysed in detail and interpreted in their literary and historical contexts.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Latin 2A and Latin 2B, with an average of 50% or above in the two courses combined.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : In order for a student from outwith Classics to be enrolled on this course, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 in order for approval to be obtained.

? Costs : Copies of prescribed texts

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate in coursework and written examination, as well as in class discussion, that they have read substantial parts of Vergil's Eclogues and Georgics in Latin and have a thorough knowledge of the language, style and content of the texts; that they are acquainted with the social and political background of Vergil's early poetry; that they are familiar with elements of patronage and the production of literature in late Republican Rome; that they have a basic understanding of the literary and social conventions of Greek and Latin pastoral and didactic poetry; and that they are aware of various modes of representing thoughts formulated in the context of one language and culture through the medium of another language in a different cultural context.

Assessment Information

Coursework - 30%; one (2-hour) Degree Examination - 70%.
