The course will offer an introduction to Roman Comedy, with detailed study of at least two plays, and will conclude with a brief look at later classicising drama from the 12th century.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Latin 2A and Latin 2B, with an average of 50% or above in the two courses combined.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : In order for a student from outwith Classics to be enrolled on this course, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 in order for approval to be obtained.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should:-
- be familiar with the way in which Roman comedy developed in its historical and dramatic context;
- have some awareness of the classical background to the development of later medieval drama;
- have read in Latin plays from both the classical and medieval period, with due attention to linguistic and stylistic detail and to literary and dramatic technique.

Assessment Information

Coursework - 30%; one (2-hour) degree examination - 70%.
