The Augustan Ideal (CL0170)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : HCA-P-CL0170

This course explores how Augustus, his achievements and his aspirations were portrayed in his own time. The primary focus is on contemporary poetry, but artistic and monumental evidence will also be considered. Augustus' presentation of himself in the Res Gestae provides a useful point of reference for the examination of religious, political and moral issues. The course is mainly arranged synchronically; but due attention is paid to chronological developments over the five decades which Augustus dominated.
