Medieval Lyric (CL0187)

In this course a variety of medieval Latin lyric poetry (e.g. religious, amatory, 'personal', satirical) is studied, with particular emphasis on poems of French and German provenance in the 11th. and 12th. centuries. The course concentrates on close reading of texts, with particular attention to stylistic, formal, and interpretative aspects.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should:-
- have studied a selection of lyrics which illustrates the variety of lyric poetry written in Latin in the medieval period;
- be aware of the immediate historical and cultural context of the chosen poems;
- have some understanding of influences from classical literature, from the vernaculars, and from the bible;
- have a grasp of formal structure (rhyme, rhythm, stanza-forms) and of interpretative issues relevant to the selected texts;
- have practised analytical, synthetic and critical skills in essay writing and have given at least one oral presentation to the group.
