Gaelic 1A (CT0047)

An intensive beginners' course in Scottish Gaelic, providing tuition and practice in written and spoken Gaelic. A considerable amount of private work is needed to meet the requirements of this course. Students not intending to continue their study of Gaelic beyond the first year should normally enrol in U03776 Introduction to Gaelic Language and Culture.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in at least one modern foreign or classical language at SCE Higher Grade or equivalent evidence of proficiency in language learning. Students not intending to continue their study of Gaelic beyond the first year should normally enrol in U03776 Introduction to Gaelic Language and Culture.

? Prohibited combinations : This course is not open to those having the qualifications for Gaelic 1B.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Gaelic 1A aims to give students with no previous knowledge of Scottish Gaelic a thorough grounding in written and spoken Modern Scottish Gaelic by combining an active use of the language with an intellectual understanding of grammatical structure. By the end of the course, students may expect to have gained a good reading and writing knowledge of Scottish Gaelic and also to be able to participate in basic conversations.

Assessment Information

Weekly language exercises and other written assignments;
Final exam (May) 40%; 6 class tests through the year 40%; Oral testing (December) 10%; Coursework through the year 10%.
