Classical Gaelic Verse (CT0090)

Semester 1 begins with the metrical training of the Classical Gaelic bards, followed by study of selected poems from T. F. O'Rahilly's Measgra Danta and Danta Gradha.
Semester 2 begins with the linguistic training of the Classical poets, followed by study of bardic poems from Irish and Scottish manuscript sources including the Book of the Dean of Lismore and the Books of Clanranald.

Course-work consists of (1) background and follow-up general reading of primary, historical-biographical and critical material, (2) dictionary and grammar work in preparation for classes, (3) contribution to class translation and discussion of the form, content and context of texts as appropriate.

Assessable exercises (e.g. metrical analysis, 'seen' and 'unseen' translation) will be set during the course of the year.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The aims of the course are to develop (1) a facility in handling Gaelic syllabic verse of the Early Modern ('Classical') period, (2) an understanding of the metrical and linguistic basis of the poetry of this period, (3) a sense of the professional activity and court milieu which lies behind the Classical poetry, and (4) some direct familiarity with the primary and secondary resources for the study of the period and its literature.

Assessment Information

The Degree Examination counts for 50% of the total marks available for each course, and the Classwork marks count for 50%. The Degree Examination consists of one 2-hour paper to be sat in the April/May diet. Classwork marks are assessed on the basis of the translation and other exercises.
