Music is an integral and dynamic part of Scottish culture and this course aims to explore the vitality of Scotland's traditional musical culture in it various forms, including its relationship with art music and urban-popular music.

The core of the first semester's lectures introduces the approaches of ethnomusicological investigation, and aims to equip students with fundamental research methods and techniques in this field. Topics include concepts of music and musicianship, classification, patronage, the uses and functions of music, transmission, fieldwork, transcription and style analysis.

In the second semester, the structure and style of particular musical forms in Scotland are discussed in greater depth, and the range of regional, generic and individual idioms and performance practices are explored with recorded examples from the School's collections. Some understanding of the historical context of instrumental types will be sought by looking at collections of musical instruments. Modern contexts are represented by a critical look at the role of communication technologies in shaping everyday practices of musical production and consumption.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass at Scottish Ethnology 2 is normally required. Students undertaking this course are normally expected to have basic aural skills and at least some knowledge of musical notation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should have gained a knowledge of the major and minor strands of Scottish instrumental music history in their regional, national and international contexts; an understanding of the theoretical appraches to the study of transmission, community context and regional style; first-hand acquaintance with the major collections and other resources, including the School of Scottish Studies Sound Archive, available for the study of traditional instrumental music; experience of field collecting and the synthesis and presentation of research findings in oral and written form.
