Traditional Narrative (CT0116)

This course covers prose oral narrative in Scottish Gaelic and Lowland Scots, with comparative material from traditional narrative in other countries and languages (mainly European, and with particular reference to the closest relatives in Irish) and folktale studies worlwide.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : A pass at Scottish Ethnology 2 is normally required.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of storytelling traditions with an emphasis on Scotland; awareness of the range and variety of theoretical approaches to studying the folktale; knowledge of the contexts of storytelling; knowledge of useful and precise critical terminology; development of generic skills in research, analysis and presentation.

Assessment Information

Three class presentations, including a written submission, contributing 10% of the coursework mark.
One essay of 2,500-3,00 words on an agreed topic, contributing 40% of the coursework mark.
Degree examination contributing 50% of the final mark.
