Mathematics in Primary Education 1 (ED0910)

The course is designed to introduce students to the content and underlying philosophy of the Mathematics 5-14 curriculum as implemented in Scottish primary schools. Particular emphasis will be given to Number, Shape, Measure, Information Handling and Problem Solving concepts that are developed in the Nursery-Primary 5 years. Students will be encouraged to examine critically the nature of curriculum guidance in primary mathematics and some of the factors that have influenced changing national policies. Research on how young children develop mathematical concepts and how teachers can facilitate such development will be discussed. The course will also provide some mathematical challenges at the students' own level.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will show understanding, competence and awareness in relation to

o the content, progression and associated terminology of the 'Mathematics 5-14' and 'Curriculum Framework for Children 3-5' national guidelines and the theoretical perspectives that inform these
o the ways in which children develop mathematical and, particularly, numerical concepts
o the need to address diversity among learners by being able to recognise and respond to learning difficulties and by challenging able pupils
o the wide range of resources that can be used to support the teaching and learning of mathematics
o the importance of direct teaching and the key role of the teacher.
