Physical Education Curriculum 1 (ED0916)

Physical Education Curriculum 1 introduces students to the teaching of physical education in schools. Students will study child development and learning and use this knowledge to guide their teaching of Physical Education in both primary and secondary schools. In addition to understanding the ways in which children develop and learn, the students will develop their understanding of Physical Education within the 5-14 Expressive Arts Curriculum. This knowledge will be applied to develop the students' ability to plan long and short term goals in Physical Education according to the Learning outcomes, Aims and Attainment targets set out in the 5-14 Expressive Arts Guidelines. Physical activities appropriate to the 5-14 Physical Education programme will be investigated with relation to underpinning Basic Movement Framework.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, the students will be able to:-
1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the ways in which children learn and develop.
2. Understand the teaching and learning process within physical education with relation to child learning and development.
3. Analyse the nature and purpose of physical education within the 5-14 curriculum.
4. Plan, present and evaluate lessons in physical education according to the Learning outcomes, Aims and Attainment targets set out in the 5-14 Expressive Arts Guidelines.
5. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles underpinning physical activities suitable for pupils in the 5-14 age range.

Assessment Information

The scheme of assessment in the course will reflect the focus on Teaching and Learning and Curriculum.
Teaching and Learning I
1500 word assignment; how knowledge of child development and learning impacts on the teaching and learning process.
Curriculum I
1500 word assignment; demonstrate an understanding of the 5-14 Expressive Arts Guidelines with relation to its introduction and application in Scottish primary schools.
Each degree assignment counts for 50% of the total grade for PEC 1.
