The course provides students with the technological knowledge which enables them to subsequently undertake practical problem solving activities.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : All students undertaking this course must have completed the Induction for Health and Safety which is delivered during fresher's week over two days.  This covers a range of activities and practices to ensure student safety and that of others. No exceptions can be made.  This is a core programme course for Design and Technology Education.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the student will be able to:
i. Demonstrate knowledge of commonly used materials, their properties, uses and the way in which these influence product design.

ii. Recognise how everyday products have been manufactured and be able to safely manufacture a 'one of' mock up and prototype model using a variety of craft materials and processes.

iii. Design and manufacture products by applying design principles and skills, use theoretical models of the design process and use.

iv. Generate and communicate effectively design ideas using both traditional graphical presentation techniques/orthographic projections and computer aided drawings.

Assessment Information

4 tasks related to the outcomes and comprising design folios and practical projects.
