This course contains five interrelated strands: the language modes of listening, talking, reading and writing; planning for progression in the language curriculum; language in narrative and non-narrative media texts; the importance of addressing schema development in literacy programmes; the role of assessment in language and literacy development.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cognitive and metacognitive processes central to the development of the four language modes of listening, talking, reading and writing;

- demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge that takes account of the cognitive and metacognitive processes central to the development of each of the four modes;

- demonstrate an ability to apply a range of critical, interpretative and evaluative approaches to media texts;

- demonstrate an understanding of the curricular concepts of progression and differentiation in language programmes;

- demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge in relation to progression and differentiation in language learning.
