Peak Performance (ED1084)

This module focuses on the behaviour of elite performers in competitive and training environments. Various sports are examined in terms of specific performance criteria and the characteristics of elite performers are established. The concept of peak performance is described and examined from an observational and a psychophysiological perspective by way of establishing the mechanistic elements of performing at one's best. Relevant research, and the theoretical background from which it is derived, is critically appraised with a view to suggesting future directions for research as well as recommending certain behaviours that are likely to improve performance. The nature of performance criteria is described in detail and the difficulties in producing them are highlighted. The multiple uses for them are examined carefully and the part they can play in modifying and even changing behaviour is critically appraised. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module students should be able to
1. Analyse the process of developing individual characteristics of excellence
2. Compare approaches to modifying behaviour
3. Critically evaluate the way in which cognitively based interventions can facilitate the producation of peak performance
4. Appraise environmental and interpersonal factors that are critical for peak performance
