Motivation and Planning (ED1092)

In order to produce high-level performances both coach and athletes have to plan carefully and be sufficiently motivated to execute those plans. As a consequence, this module will address a number of theories related directly to motivation, with specific reference to high level performing. Relevant research, and the theoretical background from which it is derived will be critically appraised, highlighting practical examples and demonstrating how the research can be applied within professional practice. The principles governing the production of planning strategies for competition are discussed and exemplified. The psychological issues involved in adhering to set goals and the ingredients for setting realistic goals for both training and competition are also examined.
