Physical Education Placement 4 (University) (ED1109)

The major themes of the Fourth Year placement are: teaching pupils across the secondary school age range; an introduction to both the demands made of and problems encountered by teachers during their probationary phase, and experience of teaching/coaching in a related professional context; teaching a wide range of activities, some of which will be to a comparatively high level; information on team teaching, course planning and curriculum development; introduction to lessons relating to the probationary phase of a teacher's career; experience of an extended professional context.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course will develop a student's:
1. capacity to plan, implement and ealuate lessons in Physical Education in Core PE S1-S6 and specified certificated programmes.
2. appreciation of current curricular developmetn in Physical Education.
3. appreciation of the role and function of the school as part of the learning community.
4. capacity to understand the place of Physical Education within the extended curriculum.
5. appreciation of the potential of Physical Education to contribute to lifelong learning.
6. Knowledge and understanding of ways in which Physcial Education can be integral to the national priorities in Education.
7. capacity to engage in professional action in an education related agency (if applicable).

Assessment Information

The teaching grades awarded by tutor and school staff contribute, along with grades awarded in placement 3, to honours degree classification. A formula drawn from the 6 competency areas outlined in the SITE benchmark Statements for ITE is used to determine the scale of grades.

Those students who elect to spend weeks 9 to 12 in an education related agency must gain a "satisfactory" comment from the designated person.
