Personal, Social and Health Education 4 (ED1118)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : EDU-4-PSHE This module examines the teacher's contribution to the notion of the school as a caring community and in particular their influential role in the spheres of personal and social development and health education. Participants will focus on the planning and delivery of appropriate curricula that aims to meet the developmental needs of young people and also those methodologies, skills and attitudes required as a vehicle for that delivery. By the end of the course students will be able to show:
-a critical awareness of the theories underpinning personal and social development; -a critical awareness of the concept of the health promoting school and how this articulates with personal, social and health education; -an understanding of how the principles of personal, social and health development should be applied through whole school, cross-curricular and special-focus approaches; and will be able to: -analyse the role of the school in promoting the personal, social and health development of pupils; -identify and analyse learning and teaching experiences that contribute to effective learning and teaching in the areas of Personal, Social and Health Education; -Analyse and discuss the relevance for policy and practice of a number of recent research studies relevant to the field. Course members will produce a written assignment (4000 words). This will satisfy the performance criteria and provides the opportunity to reflect critically on the theories, issues and debates underpinning current practice and to highlight the role played by teachers in meeting the developing personal, social and health needs of young people.
