Pre-School and Into School 4 (ED1119)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : EDU-4-PSIS

The course examines three major areas: curriculum, teaching and learning and the complex fabric of pre-school provision in its social context. The course will enable students to conceptualise the central issues as problematic and reflect further on their earlier understandings as they explore eg quality and the measurement of quality ;equality, equity and the rights of children; early intervention in literacy and numeracy; early childhood policy and the relationship of policy to research; conituity and transition; the relationship between home, pre-school and school. Students will contribute to the debate around those issues at a general level and at an individual level. This individual contribution will be developed during the course by each student pursuing one aspect in some depth. This approach will fulfill three functions: it will be the substance of independent study: it will be the basis for some of the workshop and tutorial work; and it will be reported on in the final assignment.
