Scottish Literature 2 (EL0004)

Study of two major literary periods and their cultural context:
(1) 1760-1830: 'Writing and Revolution'
(2) 1890-1939: 'Revolution in Writing'- together with a variety of theoretical issues and approaches to literature.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in either Scottish Literature 1 or English Literature 1.

? Prohibited combinations : Scottish Literature 2 may not be taken with American Literature 2 or with English Literature 2 except by students enrolled for MA Hons English and Scottish Literature.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the historical development of literature within national cultural contexts; a grasp of the development of theoretical approaches to literature and criticism; an understanding of the ways in which literature can be explored through associated disciplines such as history, philosophy, and the literatures of other languages

Assessment Information

4 essays (2000 words). Class work 50%; two degree exams 50%.
