Economic and Social Change in Medieval and Early Modern Britain (ES0066)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : HCA-P-ESCMEMB

This survey course is intended to form a component element of a new collaborative research-teaching programme involving the Department of Economic and Social History, the University of Edinburgh and the Department of Medieval Studies, the Central European University, Budapest (see web-page http://www.esh.ed.ac.uk/CEU/CEU-Edinburgh.html). It is organised on the basis of nine 1.5 hour lecture/seminars. The course is designed to train students in the critical appraisal of current typologies of 'pre-modern' European economic and social change, in the light of empirical investigations into the evolution of the Medifval (ca. 400-1540 AD) and Early Modern (ca. 1540-1740) British economy and society. It will examine long-term patterns of economic change in 'pre-modern' Britain, as protracted periods of recession, following the collapse of Roman Imperial power in the West (ca. 440-740 AD), in the wake of the Black Death (ca. 1350-1520) and in the mid-seventeenth century (ca. 1640-1740), alternated with phases of recovery and real economic growth (ca. 1040-1340 and 1540-1640). It is based upon a critical appraisal of available National Income estimates and explores the process of social change under differing economic regimes.
