Economic Development in the Long-Run: Russia (1725-1995) and The Balkans (ca. 1800-1990) (ES0068)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : HCA-P-EcDevRuBa This survey course is organised on the basis of nine 1.5-hour lecture/seminars. The course is designed to train students in the critical appraisal of growth typologies and long-cycle theories, in the light of empirical investigations into the evolution of the modern Russian-Soviet-Post Soviet and Balkan economies. It will examine long-term patterns of economic development in Imperial & Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia during successive long-cycles (1725-1838/42, 1838/42-1952, 1952-1995) and the Balkans (ca. 1800-1990). It is based upon a critical appraisal of available National Income estimates and explores the process of economic change under differing political regimes. The course seeks to develop
- An ability to identify, initiate and complete a substantial piece of research in economic or social history. - An ability to draw on key concepts from one or more of the social science disciplines. - An appreciation of the advanced literature in one East-Central European economic and social history. - A familiarity with historiography, historical explanation and research methods relating to East-Central European history. - An understanding of appropriate statistical, computing and other techniques relevant to data collection and analysis.
