Government Economy and Society in 20th Century Britain (ES0071)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : HCA-P-GES20CB This survery course is organised on the basis of nine 1.5 hour lecture/seminar sessions. The main aim of the course is to analyse the development and processes of government economic and social policy-making in twentieth-century Britain. Particular attention is addressed to the respective and shifting roles of the State, voluntary organisations and the market. Topics explored include policy formation with respect to welfare, sexuality, economic planning, energy, and the ownership and regulation of utilities. The course seeks to develop:
- Advanced knowledge of and competency in a field of economic and social history. - An ability to apply economic and social theory to an understanding of key themes in modern British governance. - A knowledge and understanding of the central historiographical issues surrounding economic and social policy-making in twentieth-century Britain. - An awareness of the primary and secondary sources employed by economic and social historians of twentieth-century Britain. - The ability to engage with a specific issue in the history of twentieth-century British policy-making, incorporating appropriate literary, data-analytical and bibliographical skills.
