Word and Image (FR0046)

This Special Subject will study the relationship between literature and the visual arts in the fiction and films of the nouveau roman. It will analyse the thematic, formal and metafictional functions of the references to painting, sculpture, architecture and popular culture in the work of Claude Simon, Nathalie Sarraute and Michel Butor. Topics to be studied include:
- the relationship between culture and identity
- the image as stimulus to memory, fantasy and narrative
- art and the subconscious
- the status of the museum as fictional setting
- the role of the image in the development of certain common thematic strands (war, sex, perception, memory, time space)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

To acquire an advanced knowledge and understanding of a rich and complex field of enquiry;
to construct coherent arguments which demonstrate an awareness of the problems posed by the texts and issues studied, and an ability to analyse them closely in French;
to discuss the issues raised in suitably sophisticated and formal French, both orally and in writing;
to engage in personal research under the guidance of the tutor, and offer evidence of research initiative.
