History of French Language (FR0049)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-4-FR0049 The course will study the evolution of the French language from the 12th to the early 19th century. The main focus of study will be developments in morphology, syntax and lexis. The course will deal mostly with 'Francien' (the speech of the Paris area), but will also consider other dialects, and will treat the 'history' of the language as a series of 'synchronic slices', with emphasis placed on the 'classical' Old French period (12th and 13th centuries) 'Renaissance' French (16th century) and 'Classical' French (17th century). Although the main focus of the course will be on the evolution of the language towards modern French, some consideration will be given to the relationship of French to Latin at various stages of its history, particularly when looking at questions of 'register' (literary, learned, popular usages etc.). Students wishing to take the course, who have not previously studied Latin, should therefore gain some knowledge of that language during their 3 Hons year. ?
