French-English Translation for Francophone Exchange Students (Non-Graduating) (FR0063)

The proposed course is designed to meet the needs of Francophone Exchange students who wish to or who are required by their home institutions to follow a French-English translation course during their year in Edinburgh.

The course aims to provide advanced training in translation from French, which will develop knowledge and understanding of the grammar and lexis of the target language, awareness of the translation issues raised by genre and register and competence in the application of a range of translation strategies and approaches.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : The course is restricted to Exchange students from French-speaking Universities whose major subject of study is English and who have completed at least two years of English at University level.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

It is expected that by the end of the course, students will have developed:

- a range of advanced translation skills and approaches to translation
- facility and fluency in the translation of texts belonging to a range of different registers and genres
- a high level of awareness of the problems posed by translation between French and English

Assessment Information

Regular exercises. Coursework 100%.
