German 1A (GE0001)

An intensive course in spoken and written German for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. The course is open to students of any year, but not to those qualified for admission to German 1B. The number of students admitted is limited. This is a course for highly motivated students willing to put in a year of sustained hard work to acquire degree entry level competence in German language.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in at least one modern foreign or classical language on the Higher grade (SCE) or evidence of linguistic proficiency.

? Prohibited combinations : Any other German course

? Costs : Cost of course books plus £2.50 for additional materials.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course is designed to take beginners or near beginners up to the standard for entry into German 2. Students will develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills on the basis of a comprehensive introduction to the grammatical structures of German along with a basic vocabulary of approximately 1,600 high-frequency words and phrases.

Regular class tests; written language exercises; 1 two-hour class exam Class work 50%; degree exam 50%
